Isla Mujeres Trip Report-Day 8

December1

isladay8-1

The next morning was very windy with no sunrise. D finished his book and then we packed up for our move to Luna d’ Miel. There was an absolute cloud burst, then we thought it had cleared for our 11 am check out. Unfortunately that was only the first of a number of cloudbursts and we got soaked to the skin walking the sort distance to Roca Mar for a cab and then unloading at Luna d’Miel.

Our apartment was still occupied so we headed to D’Luisa’s where we had cappuccinos and dried off.

isladay8-4 isladay8-5

We still had another 3 hours until check in. As you can see above, I spent much of the time beachcombing.

isladay8-7 isladay8-8 isladay8-9

We walked through Colonias but stuck as close to the water as we could.

We love staying on the airport strip where our neighbours  have million dollar homes along side the simplest of structures.

isladay8-13

We arrived back at Luna D’Miel about 1:30 and after a five minute wait for the floor to dry, we were home.

D immediately took up permanent residence in the hammock and I ventured out a couple of times to beach comb and then it rained again, another time to read in the sun and then it rained again.

isladay8-16

We both felt much calmer and more relaxed at Luna D’Miel. We can’t explain it though.

isladay8-17

We arranged to have Bro #3 & L pick us up on their way to Casa de los Suenos. We were disappointed that there was no sunset but the staff were great hosts. We shared a cab home to listen to the Winnipeg Jets game and read our books.

Casa de los Suenos-Isla Mujeres

The setting at Casa de los Suenos is beautiful and one that we gravitate to over and over again.

suenos2

On this evening it was overcast and there was no sunset to view. I would guess that it would be beautiful from there.  We settled in with cervesas and glasses of vino tinto.

suenos4

I decided upon a veggie platter. Delicious- especially with the rice, plantain and corn bread.

suenos5

D selected the margarita grilled shrimp and loved them.

suenos6

Bro K selected a combo of baby back ribs and local sausage.

suenos7

Sis L decided on the pulled pork sandwich.

suenos8

The service was helpful and cordial. The dishes came out of the kitchen lickety-split. We were going to forego dessert, when we found out that they had pecan pie on the menu. Each couple ordered a slice of to share. It was not quite as good as D’s Mom’s recipe but was a lovely treat.

Casa de los Suenos-Isla Mujeres

October21

suenos1

We all our have favourite views from Isla Mujeres. I personally love the crashing waves on the Caribbean side, but my first stay on Isla, many years ago now, was within walking distance of Casa de los Suenos and I love to return there to eat up the view and recently (I am happy to say), the food!

suenos2

These were the chicken nachos that we ordered when we stopped for a snack on what we call “golf cart day”.  They were nothing short of sensational; in fact the best chicken nachos that the four of us had eaten anytime, any where!

suenos3

Just in case you needed another perspective on the nachos…..

suenos4

V & D selected the cheese and bean barritos which were pretty darned good, but the nachos….did I mention we loved the nachos?!

I have never had a full meal at this restaurant. Chime in if you have. We typically go after snorkelling at Garrafon or for Happy Hour but based on this recent experience, we cant wait to go again when next on the island.

Isla Mujeres Day 12

September13

day12-2.jpg

We opted to keep our golf cart for another day.  This gave D an excuse to hop into the cart and go and scare up some breakfast.

He found the juice man and then made his way to Café Aluxe.  D had met the baker the night before at Limon’s.  He had spent the entire long day previous baking and by the time D got there, he was almost sold out.  We did manage to get a couple of wedges of coconut-encrusted banana bread which was packed with flavour and beautifully moist.

We decided to check out Da Luisa at Casa Louis Ixchel.  We were considering the restaurant for the progressive dinner we were planning for the following evening.  Our son and daughter-in-law had celebrated their wedding anniversary there and thought that we might like it as well.  We were encouraged to look around and thought that it was a gorgeous spot.

day12-8.jpg

After toodling around for the morning, we came upon Oscars Grill and we had built up a hunger and a thirst.  D opted for the shrimp tacos and I a fish sandwich.  Both were pretty good but the truth is, we had eaten so much amazing food over the two weeks, that we were quite used to pretty good.

day12-5.jpg

We think that we might have happened upon the Oscar of Oscar’s.  Can anyone verify this?

day12-22.jpg

I dropped D off at Little Garrafon for an afternoon of snorkeling as I spent the time shelling, shopping, writing and reading.  At happy hour, I met up with the gang at Casa de los Suenos.  After visiting the island once or twice a year since 2006, this is another place that I had never been.  We were delighted with the atmosphere and the décor of the open bar.

But it was pretty obvious what we were there for….the food!

day12-11.jpg

We ordered and shared tastes of a variety of their offerings including: Tortilla soup,

and then treated to another stunning sunset.

Our happy hour treats turned out to be our supper and so we whiled away the evening with a whole lot of nothing which is exactly what we love to do on Isla.

Later that evening though, we were getting a little bit peckish and realized that we had not indulged in desert yet so we hopped back onto the cart and headed into Centro.  We knew exactly what we wanted and who would be serving it.

We have a number of local Isla friends that we miss when we don’t get to see them and we had not yet run into our friend Jose until earlier that day.  We had whizzed by him on our golf cart when we heard a shout “Hola! My friends!”.  We turned the cart around and there was Jose with his big grin and winning ways.  We had not seen him since he had taken such good care of us two seasons previously at Hotel Pariso.  How he recognized us, we will never know.  We stood in the street to get caught up and he shared with us that one of his jobs was selling baking for his friends. When we stayed a couple of years at Pariso and he acting as co-host he would do anything for us.  We asked him each evening as we headed out for dinner, if we could bring anything back for him.  He would sheepishly suggest diet coke and when we would stock him up, you would think that we had given him the most amazing gift in the world.  Jose is one of the many reasons why we love Isla and the islanders so very much.

day12-26.jpg

Jose recommended the peach pie and we could not get the anticipated taste out of our head!

day12-27.jpg

So we started our day with a sweet and ended it with another but then again, every day spent on Isla is sweet.
