Isla Mujeres 2018 Trip Report-Day 8

April26

day8-1 day8-2 day8-3 day8-4 day8-5 day8-6

I never get bored with the sunrises (and sunsets) on the island. We enjoyed our coffees while watching this amazing display.

day8-7 day8-8 day8-9

We picked up R & M so they could join us at Limon for an amazing breakfast (see link here for all the details and scrumptious photos).

day8- day-8

We often visit Joyce and Bob when we are in the neighbourhood and stopped into say hi. We cabbed home and took it easy by the ocean at Luna D’Miel for the afternoon.

day8-10 day8-11

Later that afternoon we walked into Centro along the sea wall to meet friends J & B at Morgan’s for a drink. They are two of many good friends that we have met over the years on Isla. Afterwards, an entire gaggle of us met at Fredy’s to eat him out of pork chops (see details of the visit here).

D had his turn running into J & M our friends from PEI. They were leaving the island the next day so we had to have one last drink with them and turned into El Patio for a a nightcap.

Once we understood his quirky sense of humour we were fast friends. More recently we have gotten to know his wife Ana and his kids as well.

On this occasion we completely depleted Fredy’s pork chop supply (there were 8 of us). We could hear him apologizing at another table that he was completely out.

Things are changing on the island. It was most noticeable on this trip. Many of the reasons why we love the island is because of people like Fredy and that I am sure will never change.

Isla Mujeres Trip Report-Day 12

December14

Fabulous sunrise this morning.

Another glorious sunrise where we worked up an appetite for a Isla ham & egg breakfast.

isladay12-7

Relatively slim pickings while beachcombing for beach glass.

isladay12-8 isladay12-9

We walked to town for a pareo at Hortenzia’s.

isladay12-10 isladay12-11

Once a season, Hortenzia will leave the shop under a family members’ watchful eye, to join us with a couple of the grandkids on the beach.

As we prepared to hail a cab back to the airport strip, a couple of gals offered us a lift in their golf cart. It occurred to us that this would be a great way to meet more fellow travellers and save some cab money. We only rent for one day over a couple of weeks but we are committed to offering people a lift, just like the kindness that we received.

We headed home for nachos and beer.

D napped before sunset at Playa Sol with the gang and then dinner at Fredy’s.

We all had Fredy’s pork chops while Carol had Fredys’s shrimp and cousin Sandra the Mexican plate. Everybody loved their dinner.

For dessert we strolled Hidalgo and treated ourselves to Ferrero Roche ice cream cones.

We grabbed a taxi home for wine and waves.

There was a cloudy sunrise with a strong south wind.

isladay7-8 isladay7-9 isladay7-10 isladay7-11 isladay7-12

We knew that our time at the wonderful Villas San Miguel was coming to an end and so I kept taking pictures of it, to permanently remember how great our time had been.

isladay7-13

We made cucumber, cheese, mayo and cilantro on tortas for breakfast. We use fresh tortas from the super market, lime mayo, manchego cheese and lots of salt and pepper on the cucumbers. It is one of my favourite things to eat on the island. When I walked out our second floor door, the wind caught the cilantro and it landed in the swimming pool!

We had a visit with new neighbours from Alberta before they left. They loved Fredy’s pork chop and special shrimp. Then we read for a while around the pool

and then off to my little spot for sea glass. D joined me and we walked home for Tino’s ribs for lunch.

Afterward we researched a place for 2017 and ended up at the beach for a visit with the gang.

isladay7-19

isladay7-20

We rarely make it to Playa Norte without first stopping in on our dear friend Hortenzia. Sometimes we just wave “hola” but typically we have a play with whichever grandkids she is watching over. She does so and runs her successful business at the same time-all with grace and patience.

isladay7-25

Then it was home to Villas San Miguel for a shower and drinks out by the seawall.

We went shopping for supper ingredients and saw a partial sunset by the old Brisa Grill docks. We cooked fish, eggplant and rice at home and then went out to Pita Amore for flan.

Mel & Alda’s a.k.a. Breakfast at Fredy’s – Isla Mujeres

January26

day11-13

When Mel & Alda’s was situated in the Colonias we had the pleasure of visiting Fredy, Anna and their daughter Jennie. Boy, oh boy, can this family cook!

day11-10

day11-11

The gang ordered the sopas (a thick crunchy corn tortilla) topped with a seasoned chicken and pulled pork. Everyone agreed that they were sensational!

I asked for Fredy’s recommendation and tasted a bean, pork & queso quesadilla. It was delicious but did not make for a stellar photo.

day11-14

Fredy sat down at the next table to have a visit with Anna and eat his own breakfast.

day11-12

Perhaps he say us ooggling his plate, so he ordered a second one for us to share. These were fried tortilla strips, a light tomato sauce, topped with two fried eggs, cremo, and a great avocado sauce. They too were fantastic!

We intend to visit Fredy’s for breakfast when we are on the island in the near future. I cannot stop thinking about those eggs!
